Collin Veijer to start German Grand Prix from the third row
Collin Veijer secured ninth place in qualifying for the Moto2 race at the Liqui Moly Grand Prix of Germany on Saturday. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider showed strong progress throughout the day and earned a place on the third row of the grid for Sunday’s race at the Sachsenring.
The day began with Free Practice 2 under conditions similar to Friday, with track temperatures around 30°C. Veijer focused on race pace during the opening part of the session before switching to a qualifying simulation in the second half. After completing 18 laps, the Dutchman posted a best time of 1:22.902, placing 15th and improving his Friday benchmark by one tenth of a second.
Qualifying took place in favourable conditions, with an ambient temperature of 23°C and a track temperature of 37°C. Veijer made a strong start to Q2, although one of his fastest laps was cancelled due to yellow flags. On his second run, he managed to improve significantly, setting a 1:21.903. The lap was more than one second faster than his best effort from Friday and secured ninth place on the grid, just 0.049 seconds short of a place inside the top five.
Collin Veijer: “After yesterday’s crash, this morning we tried to recover our feeling again. Overall, Free Practice 2 wasn’t so bad, so we knew we could achieve a better position in Qualifying. We pushed a lot on our first stint in Q2, but we needed to wait until the second one to improve our time. We still have some details to tweak, but we have time to do it. The pace is not so bad, so we’ll try to make a good start, enjoy the race, and come back to the box with important points for the standings.”
Starting from the third row gives Veijer a solid opportunity to fight for another points-scoring finish on Sunday. The 25-lap Moto2 German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring is scheduled to start at 12:15 local time.
