Early exit for Collin Veijer at the British Grand Prix

Collin Veijer’s British Grand Prix came to a premature end on Sunday at Silverstone. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider was involved in an incident with another rider on the opening lap, which resulted in a crash. Veijer was fortunately unhurt but was unable to continue the race.

Sunny and warm conditions greeted the Moto2 field at Silverstone on Sunday, with the track temperature reaching 37°C. Due to a revised schedule for the British Grand Prix, the Moto2 race was the first contest of the day.

Starting from 15th on the grid, Veijer made a solid getaway and successfully maintained his position through the opening corners. However, his race came to an abrupt end before he was able to complete the first lap. At Turn 12, the Dutchman was hit by another rider and sent crashing out of the race.

Although Veijer escaped the incident without injury, he was unable to rejoin. The retirement brought an end to a consistent run of five consecutive race finishes, four of which had resulted in World Championship points.

Despite the disappointing conclusion to Sunday’s race, there were positives to take away from the weekend. Veijer made progress throughout the different sessions at Silverstone and, importantly, felt considerably better physically on Sunday compared to earlier in the weekend.

The 21-year-old remains 10th in the Moto2 World Championship standings with 55.5 points.

Collin Veijer: “There’s not much to say about today. We got a pretty good start, as we didn’t lose any positions, but I think we can still improve more in this aspect. Unfortunately, I was taken out by another rider before finishing the first lap of the race, so I couldn’t do anything after that. It’s a little bit frustrating, as it was not a very nice move on me, but it is what it is; these things happen in racing. I felt much better today, but we need to manage my physical condition better over the next few race weekends.”

Following the British Grand Prix, Veijer now has two weeks to continue his recovery from the operations he underwent three weeks ago. The Moto2 World Championship will resume from August 28th to 30th at MotorLand Aragón for the Grand Prix of Aragón.
