The expected rain arrived at the Sachsenring on Saturday, affecting the Moto2 proceedings at the German Grand Prix and creating difficult track conditions. Collin Veijer experienced a big highside at the beginning of FP2, which forced him to go into Q1 with practically no wet track time, eventually qualifying 23rd.

Although the rain had stopped and the asphalt had slightly improved for Moto2 FP2, track temperatures had dropped to just 17°C, prompting the intermediate class riders to approach the session with great caution.

After a strong Friday, Veijer was unfortunate. Normally one of the most competitive riders in wet conditions, he crashed early on at Turn 11 with a heavy highside. Fortunately, he escaped uninjured. Following a quick pit stop and impressive teamwork from the Red Bull KTM Ajo crew, the bike was repaired and Veijer was able to return to the track for the final minutes of the session. He managed to complete only seven laps, placing 28th with a time of 1:36.501.

Qualifying was marked by rain and numerous wet patches on the track. Veijer was forced to take part in Q1 and, due to the lack of running in FP2, had to use the session to rebuild his feeling and confidence. Despite this, he performed well, consistently improving his lap times and finishing less than a second behind the Top 4. However, his nine laps were not enough to advance to Q2. His best time of 1:35.408 would have placed him tenth in Q2, which took place under similar conditions.

Collin Veijer: “We had a big crash in FP2 that affected our confidence in the rain. Fortunately, I was OK and my team made a huge effort to fix the bike so I could do some more laps in the final part of the session. We managed to rebuild some feeling and confidence in Q1, but it wasn’t enough to get through to Q2. I think today we had a good opportunity to be further up the grid, but what’s done is done, so we now need to focus on tomorrow. Overall, I just want to say sorry to the team, but I will definitely fight hard in the race to bring home a good result for them. We have much more potential, and we’re working on showing that.”

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider now heads into the final day at the Sachsenring and will compete in the 25-lap German Grand Prix on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. local time.
