Collin Veijer starts 2024 with 5th place in Qatar

A successful start to the 2024 season brought Collin Veijer and the LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP Team valuable first World Championship points. The Dutchman earned eleven points with fifth place in his usual ambitious manner.

Four months have passed since his last race and yet the 2023 shooting star, Collin Veijer, managed to pick up where he left off in the previous season. Starting the race from tenth on the grid, the Dutchman was already in eighth place after a solid start and found himself within an eleven-man battle group for the opening victory.

Numerous overtaking manoeuvres disrupted the rhythm, but the 19-year-old Moto3 Grand Prix winner found himself in fifth position again but slipped back to the end of the leading group at the end of the race after the tyres noticeably deteriorated.  Despite everything, the snappy Veijer prepared his final attack and managed to move back up to fifth place within a few corners. Just 0.338s behind race winner David Alonso, he finally collected his first 11 points of the season.

Collin Veijer, P5 – (+0.338)Moto3 World Championship 2024 – P5 – 11 Points: “To be honest, I’m not entirely satisfied with the result, because I think we can do better. In the beginning, the feeling was okay, but when the tyre drop started, I struggled a bit more with the situation. Also, some people made crazy overtaking manoeuvres on me, which sometimes threw me off my rhythm. Overall, our maximum in this race was P5. Let’s see what we can achieve in the next races because one thing is that I had a difficult time here in Qatar on this track last year as well. So, we will see what we can do on the other track though, I am confident that we can do better than here.”

Hungry to score more world championship points, Veijer and the German Moto3 racing team will now head home for a short break before hopefully scoring many more points on the Easter weekend in Portimão from the 22nd – 24th of March.

The setting sun heralded two exciting Moto3 qualifying sessions at the Losail International Circuit, in which Collin Veijer from the LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP Moto3 Team endeavoured to secure the best possible grid position for the season opener in Qatar. From grid row four a lot is possible for the Dutchman.

The legendary World Championship opener under floodlights is something special for every rider, but when the long and promising season begins in Qatar, the focus for the riders is solely on asserting themselves in the fiercely competitive 26-rider field.

Dutchman Collin Veijer emerged tenth from the two combined practice sessions on Friday and Saturday and ultimately confirmed this position in Qualifying 2, in which he was not only completely alone in the hunt for times and therefore did not benefit from slipstreaming like many others, but also did important work for the 16-lap race on Sunday thanks to a solid long run. The 19-year-old will lead the fourth row of the grid for the opening race, which starts at 15:00 (CET). Last year’s rookie will be hoping for a good start and a pace that will allow him to move up well into the top 10.

Collin Veijer P10 (Q2) – 2’03.249 (+0.973): “After talking to my team manager Peter and my crew chief Stefan, I’m happy with the qualifying result because in Q2 we’ve already shown a much better performance and I think we can be satisfied considering what happened today and especially yesterday. The crash on Friday didn’t help my confidence, but we picked it up quite quickly this afternoon. I’m also happy with the laps I did under my own steam and the pace we were able to set in qualifying wasn’t bad either. For these reasons, I think we are well prepared for tomorrow. Let’s see how the race goes, but my feeling is that we are ready to start the season with the first race.”

Jerez test paves the way for the upcoming season opener

Jerez test paves the way for the upcoming season opener

Just under a week before the eagerly awaited season opener in Qatar, Collin Veijer and the LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP Moto3 team concluded a short and intensive test phase with the third and final day of testing in Jerez de la Frontera.

The conditions in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, were almost ideal after the rough weather on the Portuguese Algarve coast days earlier had immensely slowed down the lightweight class in their testing plans for the private test.

Having turned 19 just a few days ago, Collin Veijer took part in the test days in Jerez in his usual focused manner, despite feeling slightly sick, not only in order to further test the new Pirelli tyres, but also the 2024 Husqvarna, with which the Dutchman will attempt to build on his rookie successes of the previous year. Even a small crash on the last day could not dampen the positive feeling with which the youngster will continue his journey to Qatar. Veijer completed the top three on day 2, finishing just 0.501 seconds behind the fastest rider, David Alonso.

Day 1 | P4 | 1’44.445 (+0.089)
Day 2 | P3 |1’43.816 (+0.501)
Day 3 | P6 |1’44.190 (+0.914)

Collin Veijer: “On the last of the three days we were focussed mainly on the long runs. In the morning, we did it on the softer tyre, while we switched to the harder option in the afternoon. I felt quite comfortable on both long runs. I was able to do my laps quite well and on my own. That gives me confidence that we had a good test, especially over long distances. At the end of the second session, I wanted to start a time attack, but I crashed in turn seven. That was a bit unfortunate and a not so nice end to the test. But I feel good. Overall, we had a good feeling over these three days, we were able to find out positive things and know what we need to focus on for the season. We learned a lot, which will certainly help.”
