Collin Veijer finishes eighth at Red Bull Ring for best result of the year
KTM and Red Bull KTM Ajo’s home race in Austria ended on a high for Collin Veijer, as he achieved his best result of the season so far. The Dutch rider managed to stay close to the front group throughout the race, eventually crossing the line in eighth, just two seconds off third place.
On Saturday, Veijer had already achieved his best Q2 result of the year, and he carried that form into the opening laps of the race. After the first few laps at the Red Bull Ring, however, he was unable to stay with the leading four riders, although he continued to demonstrate strong pace. With the first third of the race completed, Veijer was up to eighth following the retirement of Moto2 World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez. One second behind seventh place and another second ahead of ninth, he maintained his rhythm until the closing stages, where he managed to catch the group battling for third.
Veijer eventually finished eighth, just two seconds away from the podium and +7.729 behind the race winner – his closest gap since stepping up to Moto2. He now has 21 points and sits 19th in the overall standings.
Collin Veijer (Race P8, +7.729 | Championship P19, 21 points):
“I’m very happy with everything we achieved today. We took another big step forward and the pace was very good. We still need to find something extra on the first lap, but overall I’m very pleased with how the weekend went. Let’s try to keep this momentum going for the next few race weekends, and also work on the opening laps, where we struggle a bit to maintain position. I want to thank my team and everyone who supports me at every moment. See you next week in Hungary, where we’ll try to have another strong weekend.”
The next stop for the World Championship is Round 14, at the new Balaton Park circuit in Hungary, from August 22nd to 24th.
