Strong performance by Collin Veijer in first Moto3 qualifying
Collin Veijer had a successful start to his debut season as a Grand Prix rider in the Moto3 class on Saturday. The LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP rider will start from 14th place in his first Moto3 race in Portimão on Sunday.
In his first weekend as a Grand Prix rider, Collin Veijer impressed at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. After a tricky start on Friday he delivered a fine performance on Saturday afternoon by posting the third fastest time in Q1, allowing him to advance to Q2. In this second qualifying session, he helped teammate Ayumu Sasaki to pole position with a slipstream while finishing 14th himself.
An excellent result from Veijer in his first weekend as a Moto3 rider. With this, the rider from Staphorst will start Sunday morning's nineteen-lap Moto3 race in Portimão from fourteenth position.
Collin Veijer, P14 - 1’47.854 (+1.056): "Today was a good day. The 3rd practice was difficult at the beginning as we tried to find the feeling for the front. In Q1 we made a big step forward, but we still need to find the perfect feeling. We managed to get into Q2 and do some laps with Ayumu. He helped me and I helped him. Congratulations for pole position! I'm very happy about my first qualifying in the championship and tomorrow is race day and I’m looking forward to it!"
