Ninth Place for Collin Veijer in challenging Moto2 Race at Mugello
Collin Veijer finished ninth in the Moto2 race at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider scored valuable World Championship points and completed a solid race weekend with increased confidence ahead of the next round of the championship in Hungary.
Under sunny conditions and with an asphalt temperature of no less than 46 degrees Celsius, the Moto2 riders faced a demanding race on Sunday afternoon in which tyre management played a crucial role. Collin Veijer started the race from fifth on the grid and did a great job of maintaining his position in the battle for the Top 5 during the opening stages.
As the race progressed, however, the high temperatures caused additional tyre wear. As a result, the Dutchman gradually lost ground to the group fighting for fifth place. In the closing stages, Veijer managed to maintain his pace and crossed the finish line in ninth position, just a short distance behind the rider in eighth place.
With this result, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider once again adds important points to his tally. Veijer now moves up to tenth place in the Moto2 World Championship standings with 36.5 points.
Collin Veijer: “Today we scored valuable points in a difficult race. We had a decent start and were able to fight for the Top 5, but we lacked something in the second part of the race. Of course, this is not the result we had hoped for, but a Top 10 is a good foundation after a difficult Sunday in Barcelona. It is important that we finish races and continue scoring points, so we need to take the positives from this raceday at Mugello. Overall, it was not a bad weekend and we want to build on that next week in Hungary, at a circuit where we achieved a strong result last year.”
The Moto2 World Championship now heads directly to the Balaton Park Circuit for the Hungarian Grand Prix, which will take place from June 5-7.
