Twenty-third place for Collin Veijer in Hungary
Collin Veijer finished 23rd in the Moto2 race of the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park Circuit on Sunday after a crash disrupted what had been a promising race. The Dutchman was running in a strong seventh position and looked set for a good result before crashing on lap six.
In warm conditions, with a track temperature of 45 degrees Celsius and 47 percent humidity, Collin Veijer enjoyed a strong opening phase of the race on the Hungarian circuit on Sunday afternoon. Starting from his grid position, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider did well to maintain seventh place through a challenging opening lap.
During the first six laps, Veijer showed competitive pace and appeared to be on course for a strong finish. However, things went wrong in Turn 5 on lap six, where the Dutchman lost the front of his machine and crashed. After the incident, he was able to continue, but the time lost dropped him back to last position.
Despite the setback, Veijer remained motivated and completed the race. In the closing stages, he once again demonstrated strong pace. On the final lap, he even set the fourth-fastest lap time of the entire field.
As a result of this outcome, Veijer drops to twelfth place in the Moto2 World Championship standings with 36.5 points.
Collin Veijer: “Everything was going according to plan until we made a mistake at Turn 5. The start was good, which is certainly not easy here with the first two corners of this circuit. We were able to maintain our position on the opening lap and felt comfortable in seventh place. The pace was good enough to fight for a strong result at the end of the race. Unfortunately, a mistake on lap six caused the crash. We still managed to finish the race and once again showed that the pace was good, even when riding on our own. However, that was not enough to score points. We will take the positives from this weekend because, overall, we have had a good weekend.”
The next round of the Moto2 World Championship will take place from June 19-21 at the Automotodrom Brno, where the Czech Grand Prix will be held.
